Please veiw the Fall Calendar for academic and social events.
We are no longer taking applications for the 2009-2010 academic year.
*PLEASE NOTE* Due to the state’s fiscal situation, all University 100 classes will be suspended for the Fall 2009 semester. The Science Enrichment Program will still run as scheduled and will prove to be even more beneficial for incoming students in light of the cancellation of the University orientation course. This year, in response to these changes, we will incorporate more university orientation aspects to the Science Enrichment Program so that the transition to college may be facilitated for our students.
Science Enrichment, 2009
Each summer, first-time freshmen are accepted into the Science Enrichment Program (SEP) of the College of Natural Sciences and
Mathematics (CNSM). The program assists with the academic and social transition to university life by
pairing each freshman with a peer mentor and providing activities with enriched learning experiences throughout
their first year at The Beach.
Freshmen participate in pre-semester activities designed to help them adjust to college life. Students tour research labs, meet CSULB faculty, participate in community-building activities, work with upper-division CNSM students who serve as peer mentors, and attend workshops that prepare them for success at CSULB. During the academic year, students continue to be supported by SEP peer mentors and professional staff. Freshmen are also required to attend at least four events to maintain eligibility with the program. The four events include a personalized academic advising appointment with a professional counselor, attendance at the annual CNSM Student Research Symposium, participation in at least one social event (e.g. CSULB Homecoming, Movie Night, Beach Bonfire, Getty Museum, Knott's Halloween Haunt, CSULB athletics and performing arts events, etc.), and attendance at one professional development workshop (e.g. Research 101, Applying to Graduate School, Preparing for Medical School, etc.).
Applications will be distributed at all freshmen SOAR workshops as well as during the Science Safari to Success orientation program in June. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis.
