Health Professions Advising Office (HPAO)

IMPORTANT NOTICE- We have moved to the Hall of Science Building, Room 164

The Health Professions Advising Office (HPAO) provides a wide range of advising and support services designed to meet the needs of CSULB students as they navigate through the often-complex process of preparation and application to professional school. HPAO serves students interested in pursuing graduate level health professions including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, veterinary, physician assistant, physical therapy, graduate nursing, and public health. Our office is located in the Jensen Student Access to Science (SAS) and Mathematics Center. Please visit or contact the office to schedule an advising appointment. Spring 2012 Semester Advising (January 23-May 11)

Due to current staffing, Anna is only scheduling one-on-one appointments with students needing assistance with the following:

  • Mock Interviews
  • Application Assistance (for students currently in the application process for Fall 2012 admission)
  • Personal Statements (max. 2 appointments per student)
  • Supplemental/Secondary Essays (max. 2 appointments per school per student)
  • Application Preparation (for students preparing to apply for Fall 2013 admission)

If you meet the criteria above, please contact Anna directly via email to schedule an appointment (see contact information above). For all other concerns, Maria Ramirez will begin seeing students on an appointment basis beginning March 5th, 2012. You may also e-mail your questions to Maria Ramirez @ maria.ramirez@csulb.edu or come speak to an advisor during drop-in hours:

(10-15 minutes—first-come, first-served)

The HPAO offers workshops, personal statement assistance, mock interview practice, and a resource library that includes professional school catalogs, research opportunities, and summer enrichment program listings. See the links below for important information.

Information for Postbaccalaureate Students

Thank you for your interest in Post-baccalaureate study at California State University, Long Beach.  Post-baccalaureate students who wish to complete the prerequisites for a health profession program can declare a second bachelor's degree. Visit http://www.csulb.edu/depts/enrollment/admissions/application_status.html for admission deadlines.

If you wish to take a few courses but do not want to pursue a second degree as a CSULB student, you may enroll in courses through the College of Continuing and Professional Education, which allows non-matriculated students to enroll in courses with the permission of the instructor through “Open University”.  For information on Open University, go to http://www.ccpe.csulb.edu/OpenUniversity/.

Guiding the Health Professions Student: A Workshop for Community College Counselors

The Health Professions Advising Office at California State University, Long Beach will host our annual “Guiding the Health Professions Student” workshop for counselors on Friday, February 24, 2012 from 8am-3pm.

Objective:

To provide community college counselors with information that will assist them as they provide academic and career guidance for students who plan to enter the health professions.

Topics Covered:

An overview of health professions admissions and presenters on the following topics: MCAT 2015, UCI PRIME-LC, Nursing-BSN, CSULB updates, and more.
